It started eaaaarly, early on a Thursday morning, when our alarm went off at 2:30am. We woke up, showered, threw our suitcase in the car, grabbed pop tarts & massive coffees from the gas station, and hit the road to OKC. Our flight took off from OKC at 6:30 that morning. We had an hour (or a little less) to kill at the Atlanta airport between flights. We used that time to inhale a ginormous breakfast before hopping on our second flight into BWI. Eric's dad picked us up from BWI a little after 11am EDT. By that time, Eric and I had already been awake for 8 hours.
We visited with Big Jer for a while before bolting upstairs to take naps before that evening's festivities got underway. That was when we looked at the clock and realized it had already struck 2:30pm. We consulted our "to do list," did some quick calculations, and realized that we did not in fact have any time to sleep. Eric still had to pick up his tuxedo for his best friend's wedding, and I had to shower and get fancied up before we made the hour drive to the church for the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.
Wedding day was a beautiful day; perfect early fall weather. I got to spend the morning visiting with my parents while Eric hung out with Dave and the rest of the groomsmen, or as Eric calls them, "dude's maids." After a beautiful and romantic wedding ceremony, we made our way to the reception venue, which was the Antrim 1844 in Taneytown, MD. A cocktail hour took place on an outdoor patio, where we could watch the sun go down over the rolling hills of Western Maryland. As we enjoyed our delicious dinner, we were enthralled by a couple of great speeches to include Eric's Best Man speech. I may be partial, but I have to say, he hit a home run with that one! Dave only cried a little...there's a toad. Cheers to the new couple! Time to hit the dance floor!
The rest of the reception was a rocking party; everyone had an insanely good time. We danced and partied and visited until the deejay kicked us out. We made our way to the pub on the property of the Antrim to continue the party. Unfortunately, not long after we arrived at the pub, the night took a scary turn. Big Jer, who up until that point was having a simply marvelous time (see picture below for proof), had a health scare.
He passed out and hit the deck, quite literally. It was a terrifying moment, but allow me to say that the situation could not have been handled better. We were surrounded by people who knew exactly what to do in a moment like this. The groom and another wedding guest began assessing Big Jer's condition and providing first aid. Dave's dad called an ambulance. Dave's mom talked to Jer, keeping him oriented to the situation, and Lourdes calmly provided his medical history. The ambulance took Jerry to the hospital and Lourdes and Eric followed in the car. The crowd at the pub hung around discussing the incident until the pub closed. The party then relocated to the Carriage House, where the wedding party was staying, but unfortunately, there was not much party to be had. After a couple of scary hours, we were all relieved to hear that Jerry was okay and that no major medical concerns were present. A few weeks and many tests later, he came home with a perfectly clean bill of health.
Amber, Ryan, and I got hot in what Eric likes to call the, "Ryan Reynolds Room." The room Eric and I had reserved at the Antrim had a fireplace and a king-sized bed. Not wanting all that space to go to waste with Eric still at the hospital, I invited Amber and Ryan to crash with me. We turned on the fire for ambiance. When Eric came back to the room at 4am, he opened the door and was literally knocked back by the wall of heat that greeted him. It had to be close to 100 degrees in that room. We turned off the fire, all rolled over, and made room for one more in the bed. There we slept like bugs in a rug til morning.
The next morning was the morning of Amber's bachelorette party. Are you beginning to understand why this weekend was exhausting? We dragged ourselves out of bed and made our way home to get ready for the next big party. In the meantime, Eric was getting ready to celebrate his 10 year high school reunion in Annapolis. I was unable to attend and am therefore unable to share any stories from that night, but judging by the look on Eric's face the next morning, it was a very great time.
For Amber's bachelorette, we rented a van and made a short roadtrip to Leesburg, VA to visit the Willowcroft Winery. We packed a picnic lunch, popped a few bottles of wine & champagne, and got busy catching up and celebrating before our wine tasting. The wine tasting was a lot of fun. I wanted to bring a bottle of each wine we sampled home with me, but unfortunately did not have enough room in the luggage. After a great afternoon in the vineyards, we roadtripped back into D.C. to our fancy hotel. We got ready for an evening out on the town. The rest of the night consisted of dinner & dancing. We were all so happy to be able to be together to celebrate this beautiful bride to be (who, by the time I finally got around to writing the post, is already an old, married lady).
Because it is impossible to be at home and not squeeze in a visit with our families, my parents were gracious enough to host a Sunday afternoon party (after I had come in and out of the house between events like a tornado several times that weekend) so that our families could all get together and visit, even if only for a couple of hours. We got to see our moms, dads, Jacq, Tim, and the love of all of our lives, baby Caitlin. After a delicious meal (squeezed in Persian food, too), Eric's mom and dad delivered our lifeless bodies to the airport for our return trip to Oklahoma. We arrived back in OKC after 10pm on Sunday night. After driving the 2+ hours home, and a near slaughtering of a family of raccoons (why did the raccoon family cross the road?), we turned the key in our front door a little after 1am on Monday. Just in time for a few hours of sleep before starting the next work week.
It was all well, well worth it. We can't remember a more tiring weekend, but we also can't remember a weekend where we got to see so many loved ones in such a short period of time. It was just what these two homesick homesteaders needed. Well, that and about 3 more days of sleep.
